Superhuman Buys GPTZero After AI Detector Reaches $30 Million ARR

Superhuman has acquired GPTZero, the AI detection startup Edward Tian first built as a Princeton senior thesis project three years ago. Terms were not disclosed, though Tian told Business Insider that GPTZero had grown to more than 19 million registered users and $30 million in annual recurring revenue before the sale.

The deal brings two AI detection products under one company. Superhuman, created after Grammarly acquired the email startup of the same name and adopted its brand, already offers a tool that helps users identify writing that appears AI-generated and revise it. Asked why it bought a competitor, the company said that “two AI detectors are better than one.”

Tian launched GPTZero with longtime friend and Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer Alex Cui. The startup raised just $13.5 million, including a $3.5 million seed round led by Uncork Capital and a $10 million Series A led by Footwork Co-Founder Nikhil Basu Trivedi in 2024. Tian previously told TechCrunch that the company was profitable.

GPTZero built its business around helping schools, publishers, and other users identify AI-generated text as concerns grew over synthetic writing. Tian has described its mission as helping people “detect and defend against AI slop.” The acquisition gives Superhuman a profitable, fast-growing product in a market where demand has risen alongside the spread of generative AI.
