Helping Businesses Face Reality About Ransomware

In OpenText's recent annual Cybersecurity Global Ransomware Survey, a significant discrepancy emerged between businesses' perceptions and the actual threat landscape when it comes to ransomware. The study encompassed responses from security and IT professionals, as well as business leaders, shedding light on the evolving cybersecurity trends among small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) and enterprises.

A striking finding was the disconnect in how businesses view themselves as potential targets for ransomware attacks. While 65% of SMBs and 54% of enterprises did not consider themselves likely targets, the majority expressed deep concerns about ransomware threats. Remarkably, 90% of SMBs and 87% of enterprises reported being extremely or somewhat worried about the risk of falling victim to ransomware attacks.

The rise in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) by threat actors has heightened anxiety, with 54% of businesses feeling more vulnerable due to the increased sophistication of attacks. This highlights a critical need for businesses to acknowledge the severity of the evolving threat landscape and not succumb to an "optimism bias."

In response to growing concerns, companies are gearing up their cybersecurity defenses. The survey revealed that a significant number of businesses are planning to increase their cybersecurity budgets in 2024. Approximately 57% of SMBs and 53% of enterprises intend to enhance their cybersecurity spending by 5 to 20%. Moreover, around 44% of SMBs and 43% of enterprises are looking to expand their cybersecurity teams to strengthen their security posture against sophisticated cyber threats.

Prentiss Donohue, Executive Vice President at OpenText, emphasized the importance of ongoing education to help businesses understand the evolving landscape of risks and attack techniques. Acknowledging the severity of the threat landscape, despite any optimism bias, is crucial for organizations.

OpenText provides a unified security platform with real-time threat intelligence to help businesses build cyber resilience. This strategic approach aims to help organizations prepare for and respond to cybersecurity challenges effectively.

The findings underscore the urgent need for companies to adapt to the changing tactics of cybercriminals, particularly as they leverage AI to carry out attacks. The increased spending and hiring within the cybersecurity sector reflect a growing awareness among businesses that no organization is immune to cyber threats.

Consequently, investing in robust cybersecurity measures and skilled personnel is becoming an essential aspect of corporate strategy for both SMBs and enterprises. As the threat landscape continues to evolve, businesses must stay vigilant and proactive in mitigating the risks posed by ransomware and other cyber threats.
