Funding for foundational AI startups has surged sharply in early 2026, already doubling the total raised in all of 2025, according to Crunchbase data. These companies, often referred to as generative AI or frontier labs, secured $178 billion across just 24 deals by March 31, compared to $88.9 billion raised across 66 deals in 2025. The capital flow remains heavily concentrated among a small group of firms, particularly OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI, which continue to attract the largest investments.
This growth comes amid a broader recovery in venture funding, with 2025 marking a return to year-over-year expansion after several slower years. AI accounted for roughly half of all venture funding in 2025, reaching $211 billion, an 85% increase from 2024 and the highest level recorded in the past decade, as reported by Crunchbase.
Large funding rounds have driven much of this momentum in 2026. OpenAI led with a record-breaking round exceeding $120 billion, while Anthropic secured $30 billion and xAI raised $20 billion earlier in the year. Smaller but notable investments also emerged, including a $1.03 billion seed round for Advanced Machine Intelligence and a $1 billion raise by World Labs.
Despite strong funding activity, the sector has yet to see major public listings, though companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic are considered likely candidates in the near term. As investment continues to concentrate among a few major players, the sector is entering a phase where scale, capital, and rapid development are likely to define future competition.
